Age and gender differences in the frequency of emergency care for depressive and anxiety disorders in the Peruvian population, 2021-2022

Resumen

Objective: To determine the frequency and risk of needing emergency care due to anxiety disorders and depression in the Peruvian population. Material and methods: Observational, case-control, retrospective study based on data from the Peruvian Ministry of Health between January 2021 and November 2022. All patients admitted to the emergency room for anxious and depressive disorders were included according to the codes of the international classification of diseases. Results: 74.2 % of women were admitted due to depression, the most frequent age group was young adults. 65,8 % ofadmissions for anxiety were women, the most frequent age group was the intermediate adult. Women were 2.14 times more likely to be admitted to the emergency room for problems related to depressive disorder and 1.44 times more likely for problems related to anxiety disorder than men. Those under 18 years of age were 3.15 times more likely to be admitted for depression-related problems, while adults 18 or older were 2.06 times more likely to be admitted to the emergency room for anxiety-related disorders than those under 18 years of age. Conclusion: Women are more likely to be admitted to the emergency room for problems related to anxiety disorder and depression than men; minors and those over 18 years of age have a higher risk of admission for depression and anxiety, respectively.
