Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of pregnancy women with COVID-19 hospitalized in a hospital in northern peru during the months of april to december 2020

Resumen

Objective: To describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of pregnant women with COVID-19 hospitalized in a hospital in northern Peru from April to December 2020. Methods: Descriptive, observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study. The population consisted of all pregnant women hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19. The collection was through indirectobservation, with the use of medical records and epidemiological records, then it was transferred to a collection record and processed in an Excel 2019 database. Results: 111 medical records were evaluated, the most frequent age range was between 18 to 35 years (70.3 %). 92 % of the patients were in the third trimester of pregnancy. The most frequent comorbidities were diabetes (25.7 %), arterialhypertension (20 %), obesity (17.1 %), chronic diseases (14.3 %), asthma (11.4 %), and hypothyroidism (11.4 %). Within the clinical manifestations, general malaise represented 58.3 %, headache 37.5 %, fever 29.2 %, fatigue 29.2 % and cough 25 %, likewise 78.4 % did not have any symptoms. 27 % of patients presented complications such as fetal death (30 %), premature labor (30 %), pneumonia (26.7 %), acute respiratory failure (10 %); of these, only 13.3 % were hospitalized in the ICU for COVID-19. Conclusions: COVID-19 in pregnant women presented a mild clinical picture, with common symptoms such as malaise, headache, fever, cough, and fatigue. The pregnant women did not have major complications, except those with comorbidities. And only 3.60% entered the ICU, there were no evidence of deaths.
