Intestinal parasitosis in children admitted in a rural health establishment of Cajamarca, Peru

Objective. To determine the frequency and etiology of intestinal parasitosis in children under 11 years of age treated at the Ramada Health Center, Cutervo province, Peru. Material and methods. The study was retrospective observational, between the months of May to July 2017. The children were searched and identifyfied in the clinical laboratory registry of the La Ramada Health Center, where patients who underwent serial parasitological examination during June 2016 were registered. until April 2017. By means of analysis of clinical history, data of parasitosis, age, sex, hemoglobin and origin were collected. Results. In 62.3% of children presented some intestinal parasite. The most frequent parasites were Giardia lamblia (27.2%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (19.5%). No relationship was found between parasitosis and anemia (p = 0.683) or age group (p = 0.54). Conclusions. A high frequency of intestinal parasitism was found (68.4%) in children treated at the La Ramada Health Center, Cutervo; This shows the validity of this group of diseases in the Peruvian population, mainly in rural areas, with poor environmental sanitation, poverty and dificult in accessing specialized health.
