Objective: To determine the association between burnout syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in health workers in Chiclayo during the year 2024. Materials and methods: Prospective cross-sectional study conducted on 216 workers from 10 health facilities located in the province of Chiclayo. All health workers who were working during the year 2024 were included. The Maslach burnout inventory was used to determine the presence of burnout syndrome and the Rome IV criteria to diagnose IBS. Results: The sample was characterized by a predominance of women (64.8%), the 31 to 40 age group (38.0%), single marital status (55.1%), and technical staff (38.9%). 11.1% of the workers presented with IBS; in addition, 28.1% reported recurrent abdominal pain weekly, and 47.7% indicated having experienced abdominal pain in the last three months. 75.9% presented a moderate level of burnout syndrome; furthermore, among the workers with IBS, 37.5% showed a high level of burnout syndrome. The prevalence of IBS was higher in men (11.8%) and in those under 40 years of age (11.8%). It was observed that burnout syndrome increased the likelihood of presenting with IBS eightfold (aPR = 8.08, p = 0.009). Conclusion: The present study shows a significant association between burnout syndrome and IBS in health workers, which reinforces the relationship between emotional state and the manifestation of physical symptoms.
