Association between physical activity and mental health with quality of life in adolescents from Chiclayo, Peru

Objective: To determine the association between physical activity and mental health with quality of life in adolescents from the Chiclayo province the year 2023. Material and Methods: A quantitative approach study, observational, correlational, and cross-sectional design. A representative and probabilistic sample of 383 adolescents from the Chiclayo province was analyzed using the KIDSCREEN-27 questionnaire to assess quality of life, the PAQ-A to assess physical activity, and the GHQ-12 to assess mental health. Results: The sample had a mean age of 14 years, with a predominance of moderate physical activity (80.2%), absence of psychopathology (43.6%), and low quality of life (47.8%). Adolescents with low physical activity had a 225% higher likelihood of having a low quality of life compared to those with high physical activity (p=0.017; PRa=3.25; 95% CI=1.23-8.58). Additionally, those with signs of psychopathology had a 112% higher likelihood of having a low quality of life compared to those without psychopathology (p<0.001; PRa=2.12; 95%
CI=1.65-2.73). Conclusion: Physical activity and mental health were associated with the quality of life of adolescents in Chiclayo; thus, it is suggested that this issue be addressed comprehensively by the health, education, and family sectors.
